rips roof off Lifeboat House Narrow escape for worker in flying debris. |

Coverack
is usually sheltered from westerly gales, but on Monday 10th March some
tremendous gusts hit the harbour area. At around 2.30pm the roof of the
lifeboat house was torn off, landing in the garden of the Paris Hotel.
Fearing damage to their van from flying debris, Dave and Steve Dorbin
went out from the Paris Hotel, (where they are working on renovations),
to rescue the van. Steve suffered a blow on the head from a flying piece
of timber, and a grazed arm from a roofing sheet, but luckily there was
no serious injury.

The West facing side of the sixty foot roof has lost about fifty feet of its corrugated sheets, although the East side appears to have remained more or less intact. Some roofing sheets lie nearby but others were blown out to sea by the gusts. Eye witnesses say that the whole roof section tore off as one piece, and then disintegrated in mid air. The Old Lifeboat House, which is owned by the Coverack Harbour Company, is insured, and the building will be repaired in due course. |
