Basking Sharks in Coverack Bay

During the second half of June and early July locals and visitors have been able to watch basking sharks in Coverack Bay. The sharks have been swimming quite close to the beach at times and the photograph to the left was taken on 1st July by Peter Wood from the harbour wall, and shows a typical view of the dorsal fin as seen from the shore. The photograph to the left was taken on 28th June 2006 by Adam Hayes from the sailing yacht Jacobi. It was taken off Rosemullion Head, near the mouth of the Helford river, and shows the gaping mouth as the shark filters out the plankton. Basking sharks can grow to over 10 metres in length and move North as the sea warms up in the summer. |
