Coastal
Protection
Many residents of the
village, led by Parish Councillors, are concerned that under proposals
drawn up by consultants the village will only be defended from the sea
for another fifteen years. After 2025 the sea defences might not be maintained,
resulting in the loss of the shoreline road and eventually houses as well.

Shoreline Management Plan
Outline:
Consultants, Royal Haskoning, have been asked by Cornwall Council to undertake
a survey of Cornwall's coastline, and to make recommendations for its
future maintenance. In their draft proposals Royal Haskoning divides the
future into three epochs; 1. the present day to 2025, (fifteen years)
2. 2025 to 2055 (thirty years) and 3. 2055 to 2105 (fifty years). In their
first plan SMP1 the proposal was to "hold the line" (HTL) at
Coverack for fifty years, in other words to keep on repairing the coastal
defences to protect the road and properties above the Mill Beach. In the
updated version SMP2 the proposal to "hold the line" (HTL) only
lasts for the first epoch, until 2025. In the second epoch, 2025 to 2055,
the plan is "managed realignment" (MR). The report says that
in the second epoch from 2025 to 2055, under "managed realignment"
(MR), there is a high risk of the loss of assets in Coverack. It is thought
that the shoreline road could be lost by 2055 and that by 2105 at least
twenty properties could also be at risk. The harbour and Dolor car park
are also at risk . |
