So Many Good Friends

Around a hundred friends waited in St Peters Hall, Coverack, last Sunday evening as Reverend Louise Courtney went to bring the guests of honour to a surprise party. Dennis and Margaret Cooper have lived in Coverack for ten years, and in that time they have made a great contribution to the local community. Their many friends organised a party to mark their leaving to join their daughter Ann in Australia. The Hall fell silent as Margaret and Dennis approached, and they were greeted with such applause and cheering when they appeared at the door that they seemed overwhelmed for a moment.

Louise presented them with a large card signed by everyone present, wishing them well for their new life in Werribee, 30km from Melbourne, the capital of the State of Victoria. Margaret and Dennis involved themselves in so many aspects of village life that it is difficult to mention them all. Don Marsland thanked them as President of the RNLI for their work in fund-raising and for looking after the boards which record the many rescues made by the Coverack Lifeboat. Derek Atherton thanked them for their tireless work on the Christmas lights, done in all weathers. In a response tinged with strong emotion Dennis thanked all of the village people for their friendship during the past ten years.

Dennis and Margaret were also involved with the Coverack Singers, the Lambeage Hall, St Peters Church, the Square Dance Club, the Lunch Club, hospital cars, running raffles, and in maintaining Chymbloth Way, where they lived. Louise presented the couple with an engraved tray from the people of Coverack thanking them for all of their kindness and for their involvement in the community.

Refreshments were provided, with music from Betty Gripper on the piano, and Reverend Tim Hawkins on the clarinet. The villagers sang Cornish songs and old-time favourites. Dennis and Margaret Cooper will be greatly missed, but we wish them all good things "down under"
