News from Coverack

Autumn 2009

Coverack has now settled back into its quiet steady state, with villagers going about their everyday business. It seems a good time to ask the owners of businesses in Coverack to reflect on the summer season of 2009. Several changes took place in the Coverack businesses in 2009. The Mill Gallery was taken over by Kate Dagger from David and Elizabeth Clarke. The Lifeboat House Restaurant was opened by new chefs Damion and Edward Oxford, and Ian Richards has completed his first season as licensee at the Paris Hotel. Below are some brief comments from the owners of Coverack businesses, who generally report a good year in 2009.

Marshall said that Kate was excited to have taken over a successful business from David and Elizabeth Clarke who have now retired to Gogolphin Cross.
Business has been good so far with Kate selling some of her own jewellery. Kate looks forward to a full season in 2010.

Ian only took over as licencee in March but his impression is that his trade is up on last year. There was a good finish to the season no doubt helped by the fine September and October. The quiz night is going well and from 23rd November there will be a weekly bingo night.

Zoe says that despite, the recession, we are pleased to have had a very busy season at The Bay, with new guests discovering the delights of Coverack. The restaurant has been busy with locals and holiday makers alike, and we already have many repeat bookings for 2010.
We had a great turnout on our Cheese and wine night for the Christmas lights and really look forward to seeing this year's illuminations. Best wishes from all of us at Bay and hope to see you next year.

Brenda's Shop and Post Office

Brenda' shop

It is good to see Brenda back in the shop after a long spell of illness. Angela has been managing in Brenda's absence with great good humour, aided by her team: Beth, Gwenda, Janice, Kirsty, Marie, and Pippa. Angela says that the Post Office section, newly opened in July, was well used by visitors withdrawing cash to spend. The busy season seems to have come to an abrupt end having been quite quiet since the end of August.

Bryn says they have had a very good season. In the sunny weather there has been a good response to having the chairs outside overlooking the harbour.
Favourite flavours this year in the ice cream have been Coconut Bounty, and Rhubarb and Custard.

Compared with ten or fifteen years ago Wendy found the 2009 holiday season started slowly and finished early. It used to be good from Easter through to September or October.

Ann has had her best year so far. Talking to guests she has found that people who used to travel abroad are coming to stay in Cornwall instead, perhaps for their first time.

Elizabeth's Pasties, Pies and Cakes

Elizabeth has had a good season in 2009 and she says it is nice to see the familiar friends, both local and visitors returning as customers.
